If you have noticed that your baby has a tight jaw and may be clenching his or her little teeth it is important to approach the problem with an open mind. Baby teeth grinding, also called Bruxism, is actually very common after a baby’s first or second tooth pokes through his or her tender gums, starting at about six months old. Bruxism is rarely serious, but nevertheless it is a good idea to tell the baby’s dentist, who will monitor the child’s progress and attend to any possible resulting problems. In severe cases if left untreated, baby teeth grinding can trigger ear or throat infections including strep throat. If an infection should occur be sure and consult your pediatrician and administer the proper treatment such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. In general it is important to remember that these types of problems are common in babies and mostly do not have long term effect, nor do they normally indicate more serious long term problems. Despite this, always be sure to inform your doctor so steps can be taken to ensure your baby grows up healthy and strong with a beautiful set of teeth.
