If you or anyone you know is planning to go to an Art Institute or any other EDMC school, Id recommend reading this and other articles on their practices. m.wtae/news/Whistle-blower-accuses-EDMC-of-falsifying-records-to-get-taxpayer-money/18535232 Having left the school with a bachelors in animation, i can attest to the absolutely horrible practices they take part in. Sure, there are a number of great teachers within the system, but that system is one of predatory sales practices based mostly off of tax payer dollars. Giving students tens of thousands of dollars in debt, lying about job placement statistics to an astonishing level, and giving no real support in terms of career services. To put it in perspective, I just have to point to the portfolio show, where indebted college graduates gathered to show off their work to their family like a sixth grade science fair. The employers? The ones touted as a main feature of the degree? The ones the portfolio show was designed to attract? Nowhere to be found. None seemed to have even been invited. Twenty something graduates a quarter, four times a year, with 90k in debt. Luckily Ive been able to make money doing freelance work on my own, but that was happening before i attended the school. The one job offer the career services woman had to offer that class of over 20 bachelors graduates? A waitstaff position at Taco Mac. No knowledge of internships, no contacts you couldnt find in a single google search, none of the things youd expect for 90,000 dollars. And the degree itself? Functionally meaningless, as the school has a constant incentive to pass students who have yet to actually grasp the concepts. What better way to get more money from them than to pass them forward into more 2000 dollar classes? Obviously the ability of the students has no bearing on the schools finances. No, only the schools reputation (and thus the degrees actual worth) is negatively affected by the practice of moving every student forward regardless of their ability to enter their industry. People receiving BFAs in animation without knowing how to do lip syncs or walk cycles. Graduates of the illustration program who literally cant use the program Adobe Illustrator. Seriously, if you or anyone you know is thinking of attending an Art Institute, do the smart thing and just sign up for Digital Tutors instead. It will cost you significantly less and you wont have to deal with being told that being a starbucks barista who occasionally does the chalkboard drawings is a career in the animation industry.
