Im enjoying finally doing something with these fabrics. In 2007, M & I were lucky enough to be able to attend the International Quilt Festival in Chicago. One of the vendors there was selling African fabrics, mainly from West Africa. He had bundles of roughly cut pieces that were about 6 square so I bought 2 of them, and ended up with 60 squares. Fast forward to 2010. M & I went on a Scenic Tours trip to South Africa, with a few days in Zambia at Victoria Falls. (It was a fabulous trip and I would recommend it to anyone.) We had the opportunity to buy a few pieces of fabric there as well. Fast forward again to 2015 - and those fabrics are still in the stash. After all the intense quilting on my red and white quilt, I wanted to make something relatively quick and easy so I looked through my Modern Quilt Unlimited magazines and found a pattern called Modern Boxes and Ribbons by Anita Shackelford (Spring 2014 issue). Anita made hers with Japanese-style fabrics but I think it will work with my African fabrics. Cutting the bundles of small squares was interesting. Some had pieces of the selvedge still attached, so I discovered I have fabrics from Ghana, Mali, Senegal amongst others. Plus the fabrics we got in South Africa, Zambia and a couple of pieces from some Zimbabwean women who had travelled to South Africa to sell their screen printed fabrics. I have quite a few African-style commercial quilt fabrics that are printed in USA but Ill save those for another project.
