Im having voices-in-my-head issues. I dont think I need medical - TopicsExpress

Im having voices-in-my-head issues. I dont think I need medical help, just some advice from fellow writers. In reviews of my books and others in the NA/YA romance genre I see a lot of reviews that rate the book on how much the reader liked the main characters, as in would they want to be friends with them. I understand that romance readers want to relate to the heroine but I want to create interesting characters rather than nice. I am starting on a new series that will potentially have eight books in it and features one main heroine. To carry the story that long she needs to be interesting and honestly I find nice girls really boring to read about. So Im asking my fellow writers--how much do you take the readers expectations into account when you are writing? Does this need to like the heroine mainly exist in romance? Mainly in NA/YA? I have some pretty socially radical ideas for my new character but I dont want to write myself out of business. Should I plan on the new series not being marketed as romance? Lots of questions. All help appreciated. Thank you!
