Im reminded of this exchange from The Wire while this talk of ScarJo leading the Ghost in the Shell movie versus an Asian lead. Its not right. But Aint about right. Its about MONEY. You think Mr. Money is going to say, Hey Ms. Asian actress thats never shown she can pull in 100 million dollar! You da bomb! How about I risk 100 million dollars to make a bunch of people feel better! They dont care. They go where the money is. If America starts tossing money at an Asian lead (like when Jackie Chan was hot) theennnn for as long as that persons hot, that person will get the lead. If ScarJos star fades.. she also will not be getting the big movies either. Althooouuugh.... I feel Ghost in the Shell is a pretty universal story and should be multi-cultural for the biggest impact that will lead more people to seek out the source material and open more peoples eyes to the beauty of Asian/Japanese storytelling which will enlighten more people to thinking of Asian folk as just other people and push us toward a better future. Hmmm.. how crazy is it that this is getting made before Akira? ^_^
