Im using here a Dos Palos pair (34 in./400 grams each) for a striking exercise with a complex dummy made with sticks contraption to offer different angles of sticks as targets. This is not a fighting technique... just an exercise with the objective of gaining familiarization with & control of DP recoils. The most basic one we used before was a rubber tire or a commercial rubberized dummy, but they dont give much preparation for a real fight where the opponent is armed with sticks. The best training would have been to spar with several stick fighters, but for solo training like I usually do, different dummies would suffice. Im not into full contact fights, so for maintenance exercises for good health & review, you can do the same. The tempo here is less than combat speed which can be too taxing for older men like me. Move around the dummy for variations of angles & ranges while keeping an eye on stick targets at different angles. Using a rubber tire for example does not offer much variations of striking parameters & a smooth striking is easily mastered, especially without an active, functional footwork. This method is a little more advanced & do the striking at different levels to make it more realistic & not memorized or choreographed. Random striking basing on eye perception of target positions is better.... Im using basic strikes since this is just an exercise, but you will notice that even these basic strikes can make it difficult for an attacker to come in if you have the guts to face him with an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth willingness to fight. He has to contend with these strikes as he tries to penetrate your center & he must have good reflexes to avoid getting hit or to block all these basic strikes. If I use eskrima sticks in this exercise, I cant last longer, because I feel that its too stressful for my shoulder joints. I like sticks too, but its my osteoarthritis that has made me cling to my DPs & I have no bias against sticks, because they are faster & more practical to use. When I go to the farm, I carry a 42-inch walking stick... :v :v By: Rev. Gaudencio B.
