In 1981, John Hinckley, Jr. shot President Reagan in an attempt to earn the affection of Jodie Foster. As far as I can tell, Jodie Foster never told him to do that, but he apparently was so sure thats what she wanted that he did it anyway. He LOVED Jodie Foster. He was OBSESSED with Jodie Foster. He would say his actions were INSPIRED by Jodie Foster. However, no one equates him with Jodie Foster or turns to him for advice on what Jodie Fosters opinions or desires are. People realize that, no matter how much someone idolizes another person, that does not make them equivalent to, or an expert on, that person. Why, then, is religion equated with God? A religion is basically a group of people who are fans of God, who love God, who are obsessed with God, who write things and say their writings/teachings/actions are inspired by God; who are so sure of their beliefs that they act them out in an attempt to please God. Just like Hinckley did for Jodie Foster. Everyone knows Hinckley is not Jodie Foster, nor is he an expert on her. Why does everyone just take it as a given that any member of any religion has some special connection to God or that the Bible is completely, unquestionably accurate when it doesnt even CLAIM to have been written by God and there is precisely as much evidence that its accurate as there was that Hinckleys ideas about Jodie Foster were accurate? I take a lot of surveys. Im a panelist for YouGov.org, and I have the fatfinger app, because you know Im opinionated as hell, so people who actually WANT my opinions, well, they get them. I was recently asked the following question in a survey: How important is God/religion in your life? How am I supposed to answer that? Nothing could possibly be more important to me than God, but nothing could possibly be LESS important to me than religion. God/religion is like TV watching/lawnmowing. Theyre two COMPLETELY different things. Stop combining them! Or consider this question: What do you think of Jodie Foster/John Hinckley Jr.?
