So... yknow how we were taught math growing up? Rote memorization. We didnt learn number sense or value, we learned how to count in patterns. Thats it. Logic didnt even become a part of mathematics until Algebra. High School, for most of us. Yknow why thats bad? LOGICAL REASONING IS LITERALLY THE ENTIRE BASIS OF MATHEMATICS. And if you spend almost a decade teaching your brain to solve logic puzzles via memory, it shouldnt be a surprise when your brain sucks at using logic. Also, this has nothing to do with Common Core. Common Core is a set of standards for educational benchmarks. It has *nothing* to do with curriculum. Oh, and for those confused by the new problem, heres a hint: theyre all supposed to be plus signs. Whoever made this was either really, REALLY dense, or purposely screwed it up just to make it look more confusing. Ill admit, even then it took me a minute to figure out the methodology. Still cant understand it? Well, heres the good news: your kids will be able to understand logical reasoning better than you. They will be learning how to do actual math at an age you were still being taught how to count :-)
