In light of the awful circumstances surrounding the recent events in Ottawa, I felt complied to write a little blog about my own personal feelings on what it takes to be a Canadian. Canada is a free society that is open and accepting of all religions and cultural differences, but there comes a time when we all need to consider the safety of our society as a whole. Unfortunately, there are cases where certain religious practices could be used by some nut jobs to carry out ruthless crimes. I am of the mindset of welcoming all peoples to share my country, but not if it means they are going to try to force their religious beliefs and cultural ideals on me and my family. A true Canadian is one that accepts and respects all other religions and cultures without prejudice and without forcing ones own personal beliefs and ideals on others. Canada has already complied with eliminating The Lords Prayer and the National Anthem from some of our Schools in order to appease the complaints that these may violate certain religious beliefs. Fair enough. My question is Why is it that some Immigrant groups feel they do not have to accept or conform to what it takes to be a Canadian and that they feel they have the right to force their cultural practices on me, my family, and friends? Is it safe to say that most Immigrants come to Canada for opportunities to provide a better life for their family? Most if not all of our ancestors did that for us. Are there even some cases where some are escaping poor economies, unrest and even atrocities from their previous countries? So is it not our right to request that if you want to come to Canada, we require you to conform to what it takes to become a Canadian? The main message at Citizen and Immigration Canada should be this: So you want to become a Canadian, thats great, eh! We will help you shovel your driveway when you experience your first snow storm and say sorry when you bump into us. If you refuse to conform to Peaceful Canadian ways, we will politely ask you to leave.
