In the culture of civilization, parents who value kindness and compassion frequently fail to raise children who share those values. Children learn generosity not by listening to what their role models say, but by observing what they DO. The message from this research is loud and clear: If you don’t model your principles, preaching it may not help in the short run, and in the long run, preaching is less effective than giving while saying nothing at all. People often believe that character causes action, but when it comes to producing moral children, we need to remember that action also shapes character. And the most effective response to bad behavior is to express disappointment. If this is our culture, our actions speak louder than worlds, and strategic action is a practice in our parenting, teaching, and activist lives. DGRs Guiding Principles and Code of Conduct are not just philosophy, they are a way of life. Our membership is comprised of diverse people, including grandparents, parents of young children, and parents of teenagers. And our member forum has DGR Parents area where members discuss activism & parenting. nytimes/2014/04/12/opinion/sunday/raising-a-moral-child.html
