In the run up to my show I thought I would post older bits of my work and press that has never been digitized or talked about on a social media platform. Ive been painting full time for the last 15 yeas since my entry into the art world from winning second prize at the BP portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery when I was 24. Since then my interests and craft have been through so many changes and have evolved into what they are today. Although the very nature of being an artist means you are constantly learning and on an endless journey of discovery, you never come to an ‘end’ destination. It’s like learning a new language that is ever expanding and your dictation and knowledge only helps you to communicate in a more efficient, smoother and economical way. Throughout my years the medium of charcoal has been a current staple for me. Although the medium itself is steeped in tradition I found it has versatility that you can apply to any subject. It has an immediacy, versatility and a simplicity about it that gives it its unique strength. A good example of this is and how my mark making has evolved since then is the charcoal on paper drawing Angel. This featured on the front cover of the Sotheby’s catalogue in June 2007 as well as on the inside.
