In the spring of 1857, a steamboat from St. Louis dropped off a syndicate of Yankees and eastern men on the levee at Kansas City. They had gold in their pockets, and they were looking for a place to build a town. A scouting party was sent to search the banks of the Kaw River as far as Lawrence for a good site, and they found one. That night, the Yankees met at Kansas Citys Gilliss House on the levee. Thomas H. Swope told the investors, Its just the thing. 4000 acres would be bought and surveyed as soon as possible. Dr. J.P. Root proposed the name Wyandotte for their new town.
