Inspirational Words January 20, 2014 May these words find their way into the heart and mind of someone who needs to hear them today. Doug & Linda Guideposts Feed the Good Wolf An old Cherokee Indian legend sheds light on how you can live a happier life. By Elizabeth Peale Allen, Pawling, New York Our Lord Jesus sums up living positively with two rules: “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31). Of course, if we love God with everything we have, we won’t disobey him. And if we love our neighbors, we won’t steal from them, lie to them, or do any of the other negative things that can destroy their happiness and peace of mind (and ours!). However, none of us is perfect, and the Scriptures warn God’s people over and over against the ungodly, negative behavior that it’s so easy to fall into. But how can you and I avoid such behavior and live more positively? One thing’s for sure: we can’t live as we should in our own strength. All of us sin and come short of God’s desire for us (Romans 3:23). “Without faith it is impossible to please Him [God]” (Hebrews 11:6). Today we can live as we should by “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). An old Cherokee Indian tried to help his grandson by telling him about the war between good and evil that affects everyone. He said, “The battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, inferiority, lies, and false pride. The other wolf is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” The boy asked, “Which one wins?” The old Indian answered, “The one you feed.” What are you doing to feed your positive side, to help good triumph in your own life? The closer you live to God, the more positive, upbeat and truly successful you will be. Read your Bible; pray; attend worship services. Join with the Psalmist in saying, “It is good for me to draw near to God” (73:28). We stop carrying all of our problems to God, we just take what we think are the most important to Him. Why do we think that He doesnt want to be involved in every part of our life? He was involved in every part of our making, no just certain parts. The more we stay in contact with Him, the more equipped we are to handle what is thrown our way. The closer we are to our Savior, the more we will desire Him and not the things of this world. That is a win, win right there. Ed Wrather 10:06am Jul 23 It will usually be tempting to try to return evil for evil. However, that is not what we as Christians are to do. It is not our place to exact vengeance. It is the Lord’s place to do the avenging and He promises to do it. That gives us the freedom to live in emotional peace even in the worst circumstances. Knowing our Lord will repay we can ourselves repay evil with kindness. We are to maintain a Christian witness by our actions in the face of someone who acts toward us like a jerk. As you determine in your heart to do so the Lord will give you the power necessary just as he did for the apostle Paul who said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).” - Ed Wrather (The Jerk 02.21.06) Daily Encouragement “A Prayer For Living Godly Lives” by Stephen C. Weber Father, I resist the lowering standards of this world and its influence upon my thoughts, words and actions. Instead I choose to uphold and teach the timeless and always relevant truths revealed in Your Word to my family and all who seek my counsel. I will trust You to work in the hearts of those whom I seek to influence for Your Kingdom and will do my part to live a pure and holy life in this decadent age where the wicked strut about in their disobedient acts in rebellion to Your commands. The day of judgment is coming and even now we see in part Your judgment as we observe the disarray and aimlessness of those caught up in shameful behavior which greatly contributes to the instability of our times. In the name of Jesus we pray for Your merciful conviction to fall upon our darkened world. Amen.
