Interesting Homesteading Project... I have made my own Carpenters Adze after looking for one and finding the prices way out of anything I can afford. Seasoned, I started shaping a piece of timber using it with great success and high quality. It was not shown to me, but I could not see how a repeat blow by blow would shape this log into a beam unless I had the skill of a Carpenter/Lumberjack of past days. I am pleased with the quality, but mistakes caused me to second guess my skill level and to find a different approach, then I found it. After researching, then locating a used one, I noticed my design was good. However, the small narrow head of an Adze I found at a Antique Shop was mushroomed out. Even after I made my own Adze, to a design that would fit from a modern tool, I realized I also needed a Mallet or Mull to pick up where my skill lacked. An inch narrower than some Adze of past days, I am pleased with the approach I took to make it. Shaping the beam by hand has taken a better route now. The cross saw ribs I made were too shallow, but have since adjusted those as well. I checked my cuts, showing are the cut marks I made like an old beam from a barn of past days, and none are deeper than 3/16 of an inch.
