Interesting that the Knights Templar had set up their base of operations at the al-Aqsa Mosque, which is the Third Holiest Site in Islam and is located in the Old City of Jerusalem. The site on which the Silver Dome Mosque site sits, along with the Dome of the Rock, and is also referred to as al-Haram ash-Sharif or "Noble Santuary," which is Temple Mount, the Holiest site in Judaism. Muslims believe that Muhammed was transported from Mecca to al-Aqsa during the Night Journey. The Mosque was originally a small prayer house built by the Rashidum Caliph Umar. When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, they used the Mosque as their headquarters. Today, the Old City is under Israeli control, but the Mosque remains under the administration of the Palestine-led Islamic waqf.
