It has been unknown if oral vaccines for cholera are effective early enough to prevent cholera when given during an epidemic. In a study after the 2012 cholera outbreak in Guinea, during which an attempt was made to widely vaccinate the population with the cholera vaccine Shanchol, it was estimated that the vaccine was 87 percent effective in preventing cholera within six months of the outbreak.
