It has come to my attention that some on the Religious Right within Christianity are challenging and going to dispute some of the claims that have been transpired and that are going to be emerging in the Cosmos Series to include what was the substantial message of the original Cosmos Series done by Carl Sagan. The first of the disputers claims come from the very first words in the Episode when Carl Sagan says as he said in the original series: “The Cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be”, which is being inferred to by the challengers that the Series is saying that God doesn’t exist or in other words their belief is in the Big Bang Theory. And it must and should be pointed out, the Big Bang is but just a theory. First I have to wonder do they understand the word Cosmos. It does come from Greek wording and would have to include the word Cosmic which can mean many things but I would think in this case Astronomically; when two or more bodies collide. I need only go 151 miles from my home to the Holleford Crater in Ontario Canada to see where two Space Bodies collided, those being where a large Asteroid or Comet impacted Earth millions of years ago. There are close to 200 known Cosmic collisions or Visible Craters along with other Cataena, which are a line of multiple Craters that scar the surface of Earth. Plus hundreds of others if not thousands that have been buried over millenniums. In fact I would only need to go less than 50 feet on any given clear night to look through my telescope or binoculars to observe thousands more of other impacts that where created by Cosmic Heavenly Bodies colliding on the surface of the Moon that continue today. More so was the wonderful experience I had in 1994 of witnessing the aftermath collision within hours of it happening after the Comet Shoemaker Levy crashed into our nearby Solar Planet Jupiter. Where on that evening CNN Science Editor John Holcombe gave a heads-up to backyard Astronomers in California who were still in daylight that two backyard Astronomers in Syracuse NY observed two impacts on that Planet Body with a small 4 ½” telescope. Those two observers were myself and my son Jim. Again I can go on and on but the Universe does Exist and has Existed for billions of years and the Bible Confirms the Cosmic Nature of that existence by saying the Earth is Round, and that it floats in Space. That the Universe expands, and that the number of Stars are as many that lye upon the shore. The challengers to Cosmos have also repudiated in this first episode the way Giordano Bruno was portrayed as the sole believer of what is really known by astronomers as the Copernican Law and to them that Bruno was nothing more than a “New Age” Hermitic who believed in magic rather than the beliefs he had in the Copernican Theory that for Bruno turned out to late for him to be true. It’s also emphatically true that the Catholic Church must have thought the same of Bruno as they concluded he Evangelized the Copernican Theory across Europe and was nothing more than a Heretic and of course we now now what happened to him. At least as I pointed out earlier he’s at least memorialized on the Moon. Well anyway what you hear is what you hear. You can believe what you will. But to come to your own conclusion about the Universe and how it came about go to your local Observatory and look in Awe “at it”. If you can’t, hopefully you’ll continue to watch Cosmos and the origins of what the Bible calls the Universe as I too have come to believe.
