It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you all that Gunnery Sgt Winston E Oxendine has passed on to the other side to help guard the pearly gates. Gunny Ox was a great man and great Marine. He was like a father to a lot of us, and always looked out for his boys! He was the Company Gunny of 1st Bn 8th Mar Alpha Co from 82-83 before he was transferred to H&S Co to look after a new crew of boys. Gunny Ox not only survived the Beirut bombing on Oct. 23rd of 1983 but he also survived Vietnam where he earned his 1st 2 Purple Hearts. The Gunny was the last of the Old Corps and truly lived the Marine Corps life with gusto as most of you will remember. I loved and respected Gunny Ox, he helped me to become the man that I am today...as I know he did for many others. I have a lot of memories of the great times with Gunny Ox...especially the way he loved to mess with the Officers...he was truly an Old Salt!! Please share a memory that you have of Gunny Ox and I will make sure the family gets them. Semper Fi My Marines...Our 1st Duty is to Remember
