It was a busy day at the office. My colleagues and I were busy on our laptops putting words together for the day’s write ups. In the quiet office, the sound of typing on the computer keypads was the only noise to be heard. Suddenly, one of my editors burst out laughing from something he had been reading on his phone. Apparently an anonymous person has been observing Ghanaians and realised we have a unique way of pronouncing certain English words. In other cases, we have our own unique words and expressions for things. And this anonymous person made a hilarious compilation of some of these words. My boss had received this list of funny Ghanaian-English words on social media and was having a good belly laugh about it. It may be funny, but the reality is that most of us do not even realise we make these mistakes. They come naturally to the non-literate, and we sometimes find them unconsciously entering the language of the literate, as well. So here is the list. Enjoy...it’s just for laughs! Power Outage – light off Old lady – olady Old man - oluman Electric shock – keek me Bloody fool – bledi fool Underpants – dross or supporter Climax of a movie – last show Antagonist in a movie – killer Photographer – camera man Movie hero - Jack By all means – byomis Traffic indicator – traffigator Gang leader – gangaliya Junction – janshin Matches – manches Here you are - oyiwa Derrick- Delick
