Its 2005 and its the third year I visit and participate in the annual Dutch Open dance competition in Assen. By now, I had caught the bug and was thorougly enjoying every moment of the fantastic atmosphere in that amazing dance hall. On the floor is a young, blond couple dancing for Denmark: Janick & Pia. Being a medalist, I did not know the slightest thing about dancing at that time. But like the crowd, I was mesmerized by the way they moved on the floor. By the way their dancing was so fluid and natural but most of all, by the utter balance in this couple. They were each others equals in every single way. Not only technically, but also emotionally. They were grand and humble at the same time. I could feel the respect they had for each other; it spoke out of every movement of their feet and hands, out of every expression and touch. The next year, in 2006, I got to meet them through my friends Lenny and Laura. We exchanged e-mail addresses and Janick invited me to come to the Copenhagen Open competition in February next year. A few months later, his mother Inga arranged a youth hostel for me and I witnessed one of the best international competitions I had ever seen together with this wonderful, loving and warm family. Fast forward to 2011: I am photographing Janick & Pias wedding together with my friend Marty. Who could have ever thought that?!?! Again: the greatest feeling of balance and respect between these people. Truly a magical weekend in Denmark. And come 2014, they become World Champions Professional 10-dance. I was not there to witness the competition, but I personally feel this was always meant to be. It just had to happen, there was no doubt in my mind. Destiny. From the bottom of my heart: Janick & Pia, thank you for all the magical moments together with you, both on and off the dancefloor. Both with and without your wonderful family and friends. I hope to see you somewhere again very soon.
