Its important that both musicians and audiences read this, AND hear Mike Doughtys (Soul Coughing) points. As much as I admire and respect Steve Albini and his work, it bothers me that he didnt at all address what Mike did: the problem of brilliant new musicians wasting their time in lousy day jobs, trying to survive, and as a result, unable to fully develop their music and/or gain exposure for it. And let me reiterate, crowd sourcing has proven most effective for artists who were on a label first. Being on that label enabled the artists to have tour support and build, often times, 6-digit fan bases, prior to going independent. I hope that this better explains my current situation than I have previously been able to. I realize I have fans all over the world and that many of you wouldnt know about me if it werent for the Internet. But I remain unable to tour or release any new recordings because I literally have very little time to work on them. I do a variety of things to survive and keep a roof over my head, all of which have nothing to do with my music. Im not complaining. I do what I have to do. Its just that based on messages I frequently receive here, many of you are under the impression that I work on music full time. How I wish that was true. On a good week maybe I have 4-6 free hours to work on my music. The rest of the time, Im doing low-paying jobs to get by. theguardian/music/2014/nov/17/steve-albinis-keynote-address-at-face-the-music-in-full
