“It’s nice to be asked,” of course it is. But MANY constituents in the Bay Area have asked or at least encouraged George Lucas not to give up on the Bay Area. Oakland certainly asked directly; so did M.C. Hammer. Other Bay Area officials — from political leaders and chamber of commerce groups to educators and young students — have publicly supported George Lucas’ bid for a museum here in or near San Francisco. Right now, if George Lucas is playing Goldilocks looking for something “just right,” I’d like to remind him that Chicago is “too cold.” George Lucas should take a lesson from Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” and realize “there’s no place like home.” Here, he may just find the “just right” spot near the farms where the tornado of technical know-how and digital art touched down. His original deal with a different Presidio Trust board in place at that time did not guarantee him a particular spot near Crissy Field, only land somewhere within the urban park’s boundaries. Building at a site not so close to the waterfront could be a blessing in disguise, not a curse. Besides, this Chicago Sun-Times editorial warns George Lucas that he could face the same potential public backlash there depending on where and how close to the water he wants to build.
