Ive been seeing a lot of Pebbles bashing, regarding the TLC movie, - TopicsExpress

Ive been seeing a lot of Pebbles bashing, regarding the TLC movie, and Id like to share some thoughts on the matter. Keep in mind, my opinion is based on being in the music industry for many years, and Ive been on both sides of the ball. First off, I dont know Pebbles, but what you witnessed in that movie is what people refer to as the music BUSINESS at work. Whether its fair or not, it is reality. Pebbles had an idea to form a girl group. She had the connections to get them the following; a record deal, songwriters, producers, studios, choreographers, video directors, wardrobe, radio promotions, marketing and a budget to do the whole thing. They came to the table with looks and talent, thats all. Anybody that knows the music business knows that talent and looks is maybe 10%, the rest is other stuff. Also, they were NOBODIES. Not to be harsh, but they were a backup dancer, skating rink dancer and park performer. They had nothing going independently. They had no buzz, no following, no shows, no music...hell they werent even a group. Do you know what the chances were for them to become the best selling girl group ever, without help from a label? 0.00000000%. So I think you can see where Im going with this. I kept seeing people say stuff like you gotta read your contract, or get a lawyer to look it over for you, before you sign it... They could have had that contract read to them, explained to them by a lawyer and accountant, and a fortune teller could have predicted exactly what was gonna happen in the future, and you know what they would have done? They would have signed that contract. Lets be real, it was a bad contract. But new artists contracts are bad. There is no reason for a big, powerful, rich record company to give a new artist, that has nothing going for them, a great contract. It just doesnt make sense. Another thing the movie didnt portray is that those 3 girls probably lived off of LaFace and Jive Records credit card. They made it seem like they lived in squalor. Im pretty sure they lived like queens. Fancy hotels, room service, expensive restaurants, first class flights, limos everywhere, etc. That stuff cost money and I promise you the label isnt paying for it. They dont mind fronting the money, but they will recoup. So as bad as the movie portrayed things, it was very one sided and the reality of it wasnt near as bad as they made it seem. Im not excusing record labels and how they work, but I do understand it. It actually makes a lot of sense...In closing, all people see is their favorite group, the best selling girl group of all time, and they just take for granted that they would have gotten famous eventually, no matter what. When in actuality, you would have never gotten a chance to experience TLC if it werent for the big, bad record label that people love to hate. Just a few thoughts.
