Ive got a horse here that has been left with me and the owner has not responded to my numerous attempts of contact in several months now. Ive called the Livestock Brand Commission and they said that I am within my rights to keep her, or I could run the mare through the sale barn under the owners name and keep up to the amount that she owes me, though, realistically, shell only bring 1/3 or so of the ladys bill. Ive also contacted the Lafayette Parrish District Attorney, who hasnt gotten back to me. The mare is registered and supposedly well bred, but I dont know of a way to force her to sign over the papers. From what I understand, this lady is a convicted felon who has moved out of state, so Im sure a small claims judgment would be worthless. Two things that I am sure of: 1. I need to be paid. The Sale barn will likely net only about 1/3 of what I am owed. Still, something is better than nothing. 2. I am not carrying this mare through the winter and winding up with even more feed and hay tied up into her. Any advice?
