Ive heard loads of dissent with regards to the Seattle City Counsel changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. They want to whine about Seattle becoming too PC or that its making us all look like wusses. So what?! The story we all heard in grade school is a whitewashed fairy tale. Columbus did not discover this country. He ran into it by accident and then facilitated hundreds of years of exploitation, torture and genocide of the people for whom this continent was home. We have many holidays set aside for other people that have fought for us, died for us and have championed for rights for people that did not have equal footing. Let the first people of this nation have their day too. Im sure there are a number of you here that will either agree or disagree with me, and that is fine. This is something that has been vexing me and now that its out I will be stepping off my soapbox and getting back to less controversial things like reading about sin taxes on soda in preparation for tomorrows in class deliberation.
