Ive interviewed enough legislative candidates to have renewed appreciation of the high political hurdle this state faces in meeting its transportation challenges. More than ever, rail is a fighting word in this state, despite the success of the metro Green and Blue lines in attracting both riders and adjacent investment. No Republicans and darned few DFLers are solid yes votes on higher gas taxes, either per-gallon or a wholesale sales tax. I fear that the opportunity this campaign presented to make a case to Minnesotans about the need to spend more on transportation is being squandered.
