JONE USAMATE TAKEN TO TASK AT MAKOI CAMPAIGN Jone Usamate was taken to task on Tuesday 12:8:14 when he campaigned at Makoi for Fiji First. He was accompanied by Alipate Naiorosui. Shortly before he finished he said native land has never been protected better as in the 2013 Constitution. Time was then given for questions . A former employee of the lands Dept then took the floor and asked, if native land is better protected, then how is it that you have these 17 decrees & one of is the Native Land Trust Amendment Decree No 31 of 2009 that has removed all GCC & landowners appointees in Nltb to be replaced by government appointees alone? Lifting aloft a 2013 constitution, USAmate said, this is now the supreme law . The former employee then continued, then why hasnt that supreme law terminated these 17 decree including decree no 31 of 2009. Plus my lawyer friend advised me that the 2013 Constitution is saying the 17 decrees will automatically become law USAmate answered simply , maybe because the 17 decree were passed first. Then another interjected you must remove the 17 decrees. USAmate then started talking about the land bank. The former employee then commented, when I was working for lands, I was in the committee to establish it. I asked & asked where is the landowners right. Now I see after giving their land they no longer have a say & are prohibited from going to court . USAmate then answered simply, their is a 60 % requirement & the decree is to counter those who are against leasing. What is apparent is that USAmate is not familiar or understand the implications of the 17 decrees.
