Sustainable agriculture is commonly defined as the degree to which a farm is not only productive and economically viable but also conserves natural resources, minimizes negative environmental impacts and contributes positively to society. In addition to leading and participating in complex team research, I specialize in improving soil quality and soil fertility in organic and sustainable farming systems. The link between soil quality, long-term soil productivity and environmental quality is widely acknowledged. Maintaining or increasing soil organic matter is the key to long-term soil quality. Soil organic matter improves water infiltration, increases water holding capacity, mitigates compaction, prevents erosion, and maintains soil fertility, nutrient cycling and disease suppression. Inputs of water, fertilizer and pesticides typically increase as soil quality declines. In order to be sustainable in the face of rising energy costs and increasing competition for water, we cannot afford to ignore soil quality. As such my research program focuses on the long-term effects of compost, cover crops and crop rotations on soil quality, soil fertility and the sustainability of agro-ecosystems. I am currently working on a number of large-scale agro-ecosystem trials including stone-fruit, vegetable and grain systems. In addition to my research activities I teach the principles and practices of organic farming to students on campus and am the faculty advisor to the vibrant and successful USU Student Organic Farm.
