Jersey City Prepares for Winter Storm With Aggressive Snow Removal Plan as Up to Three Feet of Snow Expected; OEM Center Activated & Crews Remain Operational Throughout Storm Additional Police and Fire Personnel Called In to Handle Storm-Related Emergencies JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA), have launched an aggressive snow removal plan as various forecasts are indicating a foot of snow or more and blizzard-like conditions tonight into Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for the region through Tuesday, with wind gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour. “Our JCIA crews have been out since 5 a.m. this morning salting and treating roadways and we will move to a snow removal operation as the storm intensifies,” said Mayor Fulop. “We have brought in additional public safety personnel, as well as all snow removal crews and will be keeping residents updated throughout the storm.” The Fire Department has all companies fully-staffed and City fire recruits have been reassigned from the fire academy to assist with any other storm-related needs including shoveling snow from fire hydrants. The Police Department has called in the midnight shift to begin at 7 p.m. and personnel from earlier shifts will be maintained to handle with storm- related emergencies. Any resident with an emergency is reminded to call 9-11. Any non-emergency calls should be directed to 201-547-5477. Residents may also call the Resident Response Center at 201-547-4900. The Resident Response Center will remain operational through the night and into tomorrow evening. Residents can call 201-547-4900 and receive a live person up until 5 pm tonight. After which they can call the RRC at OEM command center at 201-547-5566. The JCIA has 60 pieces of equipment - plows & spreaders - working the storm as part of their snow removal operations across the city. The JCIA has two salt sites active in the eastern and southern ends of the city, with 4,000 tons of salt available. Yesterday, the JCIA pretreated all roadways with liquid brine. Residents are reminded to NOT PARK within 25 feet of an intersection and to not double park. Doing so only hampers the efforts of crews plowing and salting streets. All vehicles parked within 25 feet of an intersection will be ticketed or towed. If possible, residents are asked to not park on main thoroughfares, so the JCIA can remove snow from curb-to-curb. · All municipal offices are closing at noon today and will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Municipal Court will be closing early today due to inclement weather and will be closed, tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, 2015. All cases scheduled for the 9:00am, 1:00pm, and 4:30pm sessions will receive a new court date in the mail. · The City Council Caucus meeting is canceled for tonight, however, the regularly scheduled City Council meeting will held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 in City Council Chambers. · Garbage and recycling has been suspended for tonight, Monday, January 26, 2015. · Construction sites for today have been advised to be in the process of shutting down operations and securing sites, meaning any loose materials, fences, and other equipment. No construction will be permitted on Tuesday to allow for snow removal operations or emergency actions on sites. Owners and property managers are being advised to monitor roofs, especially where drifts bank against walls for weight buildup and open roof drains. · The Recreation Department has canceled all programming and after school activities – including after school meal sites – today and tomorrow, January 27, 2015. Programming will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. · The Department of Health & Human Services has partnerships with the following agencies, who will be relocating anyone in need of shelter. Garden State Episcopal Drop In Center, 514 Newark Ave (Hudson Gardens Coordinated Entry Program) 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; Hudson County Self Help Center, 880 Bergen Avenue, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily; and Hudson Pride Connections Center, 32 Jones Street, Monday & Wednesday: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. · Senior Meals: Monday’s Meals on Wheels home meal deliveries will be completed to the best of the ability of our drivers, given the available resources and driving conditions. If possible, meals scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday will be distributed on Monday. THERE WILL BE NO HOME-DELIVERED MEALS ON TUESDAY. Anybody who did not receive a meal on Monday will receive it on Wednesday, and regular meal delivery is scheduled to resume on Wednesday. · All HHS congregate senior meal sites will be closed on Tuesday. Those sites are: o Berry Gardens, 92 Danforth Avenue; Boyd McGuiness, 2555 Kennedy Boulevard; o Grace Senior Center, 39 Erie Street; o Lafayette Living Center, 463 Pacific Avenue; o Ocean Towers, 425 Ocean Avenue; o Olga Rodriguez Senior Center, 358 Montgomery Street; o Villa Borinquen (PACO), 398 Grove Street; o Joseph Connors Senior Center, 28 Paterson Street; and o Maureen Collier Senior Center, 335 Bergen Avenue · Animal Control: If you see an animal in distress, or there is an animal that is posing an imminent threat to the safety of people or other animals, please call the police non-emergency phone number, 201-547-5477, and they will coordinate with an Animal Control Officer. · Restaurants and Food Establishments: In the event of a power outage, our health inspectors will be on-call to make sure that food safety guidelines are being followed. Following the storm, residents are reminded to NOT shovel snow into the street and should clear sidewalks in front of their property of snow and ice in accordance with municipal ordinance.
