Jesus Christ is the light of life, the one and only light. There are many different objections to this statement. But they basically contain the same accusation. What inexcusable presumption it is to claim that Jesus Christ is not merely one among many witnesses to the truth, but the only witness. In the intellectual field this accusation will take the form that this claim leads to a restriction of the source of human knowledge. In the moral field it will be that this kind of arrogance leads to a breakdown of communication. In the political field it will be that this intolerance hinders people of different faiths and cultures getting on. But we have no option in this matter. Christian freedom is simply the freedom to confess Jesus Christ as the one and only Prophet, the Word of God, the light of life. And it stands or falls by whether it is the freedom to make this confession. Karl Barth CD IV/3, 89-90
