Job Title: TEACHER NOC #: 4141 Location: SIKSIKA MEDICINE LODGE Travel Required: INFREQUENT Salary Range: To Be Negotiated Position Type: P/T REGULAR SALARY SUMMARY OF POSITION The Siksika Medicine Lodge classroom is made up of students who represent a broad range of abilities, interests, needs and challenges. Teachers use various instructional strategies to maintain student interest and maximize individual learning within a group teaching environment. The Teacher is responsible for providing an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological growth. This person is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program that will result in youth, ages 12 to 17 (with a maximum of 10 students) achieving academic success in accordance with Alberta’s educational curriculum guidelines. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teaching Position includes but may not be limited to the following: • Create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful and stimulating environment which is conducive to student’s learning • Plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the curriculum ensuring breadth and balance in core subjects • Identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes using • Maintain good order and classroom management among the students, safeguarding their health and safety • Utilize a variety of assessment tools throughout the duration of each student cycle • Organise and manage groups or individual students ensuring differentiation strategies of learning are incorporated to meet the learning needs of individual students • Plan opportunities to develop the social, emotional and cultural aspects of students’ learning • Maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping and reporting of student’s progress • Prepare appropriate records for the transfer of students • Ensure effective use of support staff within the classroom • Participate in meetings, seminars and in-service training sessions • Regularly meet as a team member of Treatment Team and be actively involved in the preparation and development of Individual Treatment Plans, strategies and goals with Key Workers • Ensure that Siksika Medicine Lodge policies are reflected in daily practice • Communicate and consult with student’s school and guardians pertaining to all aspects of their student’s education – academic, social and emotional while at the Siksika Medicine Lodge • Liaise with outside agencies when appropriate • Continue professional development, maintaining a portfolio of training undertaken for accreditation purposes • Promote equality as an integral part of the role and to treat everyone with fairness and dignity • Recognize health and safety is a responsibility of every employee, to take reasonable care of self and others and to comply with the Siksika Medicine Lodge Health and Safety policy and any other procedures/ rules that apply to this role Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the position, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. Employees will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from the direct supervisor to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Must have knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture and community life Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree Experience working with Youth in a residential environment is an asset Must have great computer and organizational skills Fluency in a First Nations language is a definite asset Must be willing to complete all employment requirements Must pass & renew CPIC-Vulnerable Sector Check & Child Intervention Record Check, as required Must have current Standard First Aid KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Teachers need the following characteristics: • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills required • The ability to establish rapport and enjoy contact with all stakeholders • Clear, pleasant speaking voice • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills • Demonstrate empathy towards others in all interactions • Follows directives provided in the Siksika Medicine Lodge policy manual • Solve problems and resolve conflict effectively • Work independently and as both a leader and a member of a team • Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment • Excellent organizational and time management skills • Knowledge in cultural competencies or cultural safety competencies • Competent with common business software such as MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Databases • Proficient written and verbal skills • Abide by Alberta Teacher Association(ATA) and Siksika Medicine Lodge (SML) Code of Ethics • Proactive, forward thinking, and able to anticipate needs and plan accordingly • Provide positive encouragement and support with ethics and confidentiality in both student and the work relationships • Lead and model as an effective team member • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients and other interested individuals concerned with the Treatment Program • Work within goals and objectives of SML • Good working knowledge of Aboriginal culture, values, language, spirituality and community life on the reserves as a foundation to healing • Provide and receive constructive feedback to enhance the structure and operation of SML • Maintain respectful relationships with established community resources for Aboriginal and culture identity and spirituality WORKING CONDITIONS The teacher will spend half of their working day instructing classes. They may teach up to 10 students a day. The work can be demanding, requiring a great deal of physical, mental and emotional energy. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS As a staff member of an organization involved in accreditation, the incumbent is required to participate fully in the accreditation process which may involve being assigned to a self-assessment team, completing the self-assessment process, and addressing recommendations in the accreditation report.
