John Hagen, head bellman at Many Glacier Hotel, and I were hiking on a day off to Cracker Lake on June 13, 1974. We rounded a blind corner and encountered a sow grizzly with two cubs. The griz woofed her cubs up the slope to safety and subsequently bluff-charged us. Not having the benefit of bear-safety training back in those days, we took off running like idiots. After about a mile, we slowed down and looked behind us and the bear was nowhere in sight, having only bounded 2-3 steps toward us. We reconstructed our running in this picture. John was a cross-country runner in college, and I was with him step-for-step down the trail! :-)
