John Locke (1632 -1704), did much to inspire the libertarian ideals of the American Revolution first, then of the French, and Haitian Revolutions. This, in turn, set an example which inspired people throughout Europe, Asia, and even Latin America, including the island of Cuba (last Latin America nation, along Puerto Rico, in obtaining independence from the Spanish metropolis ). Lockes premises concerning natural rights, freedoms, and the division of powers or branches within government( Lockes incorporated that last premise from French jurist Montesquieu) can be clearly seem at the core of the democratic governmental structure of the Cuban Constitution of 1940. For only thirteen years of the whole history of the island, had the Cuban people the opportunity to fully enjoy Lockes philosophical propositions in real life. In 1952, Batista became President for the second time in March, after seizing power in a military coup and canceling the 1952 elections, violating all natural rights and liberties, and instituting a dictatorial regime. This gave rise to the Cuban Revolution that promised to reestablish all lost rights and liberties articulated indirectly by John Lockes ideas in our Constitution. However, the revolution sadly turned into a farce, into a Communist totalitarian entity made to the image of Joseph Stalins. It suppressed and shifted even further from the natural rights and liberties than Batistas dictatorship. The renewed diplomatic and commercial relationship between the totalitarian regime and Washington, only deal with political and business affairs, nothing has been mentioned about the natural rights that our good old friend, the English man John Locke mentioned in his writings. The struggle for true liberation hasnt come to an end, it will continue until the materialization of those rights and liberties reincarnate in the reestablishment of the Cuban Constitution.
