Join us TONIGHT! From a Q&A with Gijs... Q) So well be meeting with folks in Beacon who are grounded in NGOs, in locally-owned businesses, all across the spectrum. Is there anything in particular you are eager to discuss with that group? A) Yes, with the whole localization movement, there is an interesting discussion about impact — how to balance between scaling and keeping things local. My experience is from India, such a huge place. When you try to do something local, the argument is youre only impacting a tiny few. But if you focus just on scaling up, the quality will suffer. My insight is that if you do something really well at the local level, it gets picked up in other places and you dont have to do it all. It can move across geographies anywhere in the world. So we can talk about making sense in complex systems, and thinking about scale. And one more thing thats inspiring for me is the movement of leading from the future as it emerges. It isnt just about getting the ideas right but acting on them so that the results can be seen and built upon. Sometimes when situations are messy and chaotic you need to act first and think later — but that does not work in more stable situations. So as changemakers we can learn how to tune in to what wants to happen — and adapt our strategy accordingly.
