July 27th 2013 changed my family life forever. Our prince Kenny KJ Smith at 18 months was hospitalized with failure to thrive, low blood counts (red/platelets), enlarged liver and spleen, and unmanageable fevers. As a mother, never did I think I would have to sit and watch my baby endure so much pain. So many times Ive thought of giving up but to watch him keep that beautiful smile on his face I knew if he could fight as hard as he has I had no choice but to reciprocate. 3 months hospitalized, no answers or diagnosis we were transported to the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. It was there Kj was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) which is a rare cancer. Cancer?? Chemotherapy? My husband and I couldnt believe our ears as the doctors told us about this disease and treatment plan. There was no easy way to accept it but Kj needed us! We watched our son get worst before better; his skin began to wilt from top to bottom. Kj was unable to eat but had uncontrollable bowel movements and constant projectile vomit. Furthermore, he had over 50 red blood/20 platelets/3 plasma transfusions. There was a point where we thought our son would die. He even had to learn to walk again, along with other motor functions. Kj was placed into 3 medical induced comas to control the fevers his body couldnt break and15 procedures to gain access to his blood supply. Through this whole process theres so many people that my family would like to thanks. First starting off with our Mighty LORD.. He has brought us a mighty long way. He watched over every doctor that has came into contact with my baby. The PICU and Oncology team at NMCP.. KJ was treated diligent care from the day he checked in. Although his attitude wasnt the best you still loved him unconditionally. You gave my husband and I a piece of mind to go home at night and rest because he was under GREAT care. Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (PICU/Hematology/oncology ward) only after being under your care for 3 hours you had answers and a plans. BY FAR THE BEST CHILDRENS Hospital. Dr. Biswas, LCDR Rosa Gurguic, CDR Bryan, and Dr. Patel I would like to thank specifically. All of our family that were here daily encouraging and sympathizing with us you were instrumental in keeping our sanity. The USN.... (Great Leadership) When this happened to my family NO ONE questioned the whereabouts of either my husband or myself. They knew family was number one. Many of you reading this may be in the civilian world and Im not sure if any job would give you a year off with pay and benefits but the worlds finest Navy did for my family. My son Jaylen, my nephew Dyquan and my mom Cynthia thanks so much for understanding when we have missed birthdays, family time, major holidays, and school events. Friends and family I tried to keep you updated as much as possible with the status of KJ and my family appreciate all the prayers, visits, and gifts. Ive heard so many times for mothers that Im such an inspiration and if you were in my shoes they dont know if they could haven done it but im telling you, you would and not think twice about it. Its a certain superpower GOD gave us as parents. Anyone that Ive forgotten pls charge it to the game and not my heart. Theres so many people that has touch my family I cant single out everyone but Im bless to have you in my life. So today I sit here with the biggest smile on my face as I type this because I can honestly say my son is DONE! He is my CHAMP, my MVP, my Inspiration. This baby who Im sure havent had the slightest clue of what he just went through the past year has beat Cancer AXX! He is by far the STRONGEST person I know weighing in at 26 pounds. His testimony will be something my family will continue to spread. I know KJ went through this year for a reason. The next kid that check into Portsmouth with the same problems the doctors NOW has something to refer to. So today celebrate with my family the completion of chemo! 1 year and continuing to fight!
