June 24, 2013 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Is 49:1-6, Ps 139, Acts 13:22-26, Lk 1:57-66, 80 Three funerals in one day this past week got me thinking a lot about the Communion of Saints. Most of you profess this belief in your Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Anglican, Presbyterian, Catholic or other church when you recite the Apostles Creed. Do you know what you are saying when you say “I believe….in the Communion Of Saints? The concept is simple. All those who love the Lord are His saints. This means those alive today and those who have “gone to their death in the hope of rising again”. When you are in need don’t you ask your friends and people that love you to pray for you? Why not ask those whom you knew and loved here but who have died and gone to meet the Lord? The story of the death of Lazarus tells us that the dead see and know what goes on below and are concerned. And that they are in earshot of God-Almighty. Why would we NOT ask them to pray for us? Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. John and Jesus are the only two people whom we celebrate their Birthday in the Church’s Liturgical calendar. For any other “canonized” Saint we celebrate the day they died and went to heaven. The church has process of canonizing. But because we believe John the Baptist was sanctified by God while still in his mother’s womb we can also celebrate him on his birth. (because John leapt for Joy when He heard the voice of the one carrying his Lord, we believe John had been sanctified) Today’s encouragement…. Reach back into your past and ask a deceased loved one to pray for you. It may seem a little weird at first, but do it anyway, the same way you would ask someone from your neighbor or your class at school. You profess it – now practice it! And be blessed!
