June 7, 2013 Statement from Raj Sherman - Simply postponing brutal PDD cuts not good enough Edmonton – Alberta Liberal Leader Raj Sherman has released the following statement in response to the latest moves by the Redford Conservatives regarding persons with disabilities: “Reports that the Redford Conservatives are postponing at least some of the cuts to the Community Access Supports Program for persons with developmental disabilities is welcome only as a sign of progress. “However, simply postponing these brutal cuts to PDD funding is not enough. These cuts must be cancelled altogether with full funding restored. Only then will the Redford Conservatives have demonstrated sufficient good will towards the PDD community for meaningful and respectful consultation to take place. “For consultation on future changes to PDD programs and services to have any chance at success, the Redford Conservatives must be willing to truly listen – and they must show they truly understand that persons with developmental disabilities are not line items; they are real people with real needs. “These needs must be paramount. “I sincerely hope that this is not a delaying tactic on the part of the Redford Conservatives. Hopefully, they are ready to consult with the PDD community and then implement any changes over a few years, not a few months. “Until the Redford Conservatives announce that these brutal PDD cuts have been cancelled and that they are ready for meaningful and respectful consultations, the protests will continue. The Alberta Liberals will continue to stand by the PDD community for the duration of these protests and until fair and humane PDD policies are achieved.” -30- For more information, contact: 013-1 newALOgo newfooter Amy McBain, Director of Communications Tel: 780.427.7438.
