Juneau Holiday Village UPDATE: I am currently amassing porcelain and ceramic holiday village pieces and have successfully recruited volunteers and solicited donations for the holiday village project. I am currently awaiting word from Bud Jaeger regarding the availability of Radio Shack as a potential site. If you have holiday decorations especially village pieces that you would be willing to donate to the cause please keep this project in mind. Thank you! I stopped in to the mall office today and asked about the lease rate which is $3/sq ft with the space being 2000 sq ft for a six week period Nov 21st 2014- January 2nd 2015 Hello Mr. Jaeger- I was just writing to ask about leasing the current unoccupied space (previously Radio Shack) in the Nugget Mall for a Community Holiday village. The following is the message that I have sent out to local businesses soliciting donations, volunteers and sponsorship. Thank you. Hi! I wanted to share an idea with you and see if you would be interested in sponsoring a neighborhood in this proposed holiday village. ADDENDUM: I am still researching ways to bring a bike exchange program to Juneau but in the mean time I wanted to put this out there....I think it would be awesome to set-up a huge Christmas/holiday village in one of the malls (several unused shops available) from Black Friday to New Years complete with little towns, nutcrackers, trains, music etc. I have several village pieces I would gladly donate and I would also take on the task of organizing, setting up and tearing down the village but would obviously need help. Local youth groups etc. could set-up each weekend for gift wrapping or bake sale fundraisers and the village would be open to the public, free of charge or by donation. There might be costs associated with leasing a space for 1 month as well as costs for additional materials (unless we could get them donated) but I think spreading holiday cheer and the spirit of the season in a way that everyone could access it regardless of ability to pay would be cool. I have seen small scale villages set up here before but I am talking about a huge one that could fill up an entire vacant shop that people could walk through with their families. I will post pictures of some inspirational ideas. In the meantime please consider donating to this cause or pointing me in the right direction for help/volunteers, and/or a community foundation that could support this project on an annual basis. I will be compiling a list and a floor plan for the village with or without volunteers. The village could feature little neighborhoods that recreate scenes from all of the classic holiday movies. Could recreate the houses and street scenes. Wonder if it could be funded by some sort of grant for art. Another potential funding source would be to have local businesses sponsor a “neighborhood” within the village and then have a corresponding structure within their neighborhood. We could almost recreate Juneau neighborhoods (brewery, bakeries, offices, waterfront etc.) There would be an initial investment in the materials and supplies and then an annual operating cost to rent a space for setting it up from end of Nov. to New Year. although it would be worth the effort to try and get space donated. Annual donations for entry would be shared among any of the local non-profits that would be interested in hosting bake sales. food drive etc, We have 20 days to pull this off I did inquire at Joanns about donating materials (nutcrackers, snow, village pieces) to the cause and was told to contact corporate so will be doing so. Each week the admission (by donation) could go to a different local charity. One week cost of admission could be a canned good (to food bank-Darren Darren Adams). Another week the donations could go to another charity. We could develop a calendar that scheduled slots for various local youth groups, sports teams etc…..equal opportunity fundraising. The holiday village would draw patrons into the mall. I can be contacted at 500-8525 or via email at shill789@hotmail
