Just 19 years after the battle, William Tipton recorded a series - TopicsExpress

Just 19 years after the battle, William Tipton recorded a series of panoramas from a small platform located near the Angle on what would become Hancock Ave. These images were used by French artist Paul Philippoteaux to create the masterpiece we know as the Cyclorama. In this comparison shot, you see Tiptons camera is showing us the area from the Angle out to the Cordoris and beyond. From the section of the Cyclorama that includes this area, you see how dependent the artist was on Tiptons photographs to maintain accuracy within his painting. The pig tight/cow high fence you see on the right in both photo and painting extends out to the Angle. Philippoteauxs attention to accuracy and detail amazes me. His masterpiece reminds us why 150 years later we can stand at the Angle and sense the courage and sacrifice that took place on that very spot.
