Just a quick blurb about a movie I caught last night - Stake Land. I always saw it in the listings and just figured it was another crap vampire movie. WRONG! Jim Mickle, whose film Mulberry Street was (in my opinion) the best of the 2006 horror-fest 8 films to die for has written and directed the best vampire movie since 1987s Near Dark. Think the Walking Dead, but with very hard to kill vampires, instead of zombies. The focus is less on the monsters, and more on the characters. And since it came out about the same time as the WD, it cannot be accused of stealing the post-apocalyptic survival premise, unlike some TV shows that totally ripped it off. (Falling Skies, Revolution) The main characters (as briefly as some of them appear) are developed beautifully. I genuinely felt for each and every one, especially Belle, played by the awesome Danielle Harris. (1988 - Halloween IV) So nice to see her in a good movie for a change. I started watching this movie on a whim, expecting to tune out after a few minutes, but instead found myself still glued to the TV 90 minutes later wanting more. Highly recommended, currently available on Netflix and Comcast on demand.
