KANSAS CITY Scrooge of the Year Candidate Spotlight: The Walmart Family, nominated by UFCW Local 2 Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest employer yet pays more than half of its employees (up to 825,000 workers) LESS than $25,000 a year. At the same time, the majority shareholders of the company are Walton family members who have a combined wealth of nearly $145 billion. This is more than the combined wealth of 42 percent of working American families. The public policy organization, Demos, issued a report showing that Wal-Mart could pay every employee at least $14.89 an hour without raising prices. Instead, they choose profit over people!! With the current wages paid by Wal-Mart, most employees are forced to rely on government subsidies such as food stamps and Medicaid. A congressional report showed that taxpayers provide a $900,000 subsidy each year at just one of the company’s 4,000 stores. Wal-Mart affects the American economy by being a dominant driver in outsourcing from the USA. In a five year period, Wal-Mart’s imports from China, alone, led to the elimination of 133,000 American jobs. The insistence that many US firms, from Levi’s to Master Lock, move manufacturing overseas in order to maintain their status as Wal-Mart suppliers affects many jobs and industries outside of those on its payroll. Wal-Mart is eroding the American Dream for working Americans, and we must band together to force a change!! Vote for the WalMart family for KC Scrooge of the Year
