Kaskaskia College Tackles the Changing Job Market Kaskaskia College received funding to increase awareness of self-employment job options. Recent studies show that the “future of work” is changing dramatically. Ever larger numbers of people will generate income as contracted workers, freelancers, owners of small businesses and entrepreneurs. In addition, an increasing number of workers will be employed by small businesses that look for unique skill sets. New funding for entrepreneur projects was awarded to the College by the Coleman Foundation. Kaskaskia College competed for the funds at the recent National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) Conference. Coleman selected ten community colleges nationwide to help identify effective teaching and mentoring methods. As part of the Kaskaskia College project, the College will recognize an entrepreneur from among Spring 2015 KC-registered students. Also, a young entrepreneur attending one of the college district’s 17 high schools will be recognized. Steven Groner, Project Manager for the college explains that “we know there are talented and resourceful students in our community that operate a small business or meet a community need while completing their education. These students demonstrate the creativity and determination valued by the changing workplace.” Rules for the recognition awards are being developed and will be issued early in 2015. The award winners will be announced next summer. Mr. Groner adds that “we are also searching for Kaskaskia College Alumni willing to share their business stories”. Efforts are underway to compile helpful insights and suggestions for future business owners. Groner points out “the US Small Business Administration (SBA) generally defines a small company as having less than 500 employees, so almost all of our farms and businesses qualify. This is a chance to help others hoping to follow in your footsteps.” Contact the Illinois Small Business Development Center for further information about sharing your own story of business ownership or, recognizing a high school/college student for their entrepreneurial activities.
