Keelie wanted to know why I wanted her to scrap the sit-ups from her life. Heres my response, in short order: There is a complete array of reasons that one should NEVER use sit ups, crunches, et al. Sit ups promote movement at the lower lumbar area, where as the muscles surrounding the spine (your abs, obliques, etc) are designed to stabilize and protect the spine *from* movement - so in essence, you are doing the exact opposite of what your body wants/designed to do. So unless you are interested in exposing your very sensitive low back (80% of Americans experience low back pain on the regular) to issues such as instability, disc problems and the like - I would resort to other methods of training my abs. Try plank variations, Turkish get-ups, simple carries (like holding something heavy in one hand and walking with it keeping a proud chest or even carrying the item overhead - they will result in much better trunk activation, strengthening and prolonging the life of your one and only spine. BOOM.
