Keep the questions coming! I am answering any and all questions about Astro since his arrival here! You can message questions, comment, or post them to our wall! Here is the second batch of Q&As for you :) Tamra Martin – Q: Im actually curious about how is with baths? I got my dog in a similar way to astro he was in the shelter for along time after being returned several times and being told he was an escape artist and . . . . . all of which I have yet to see as well. The only thing is that mine does not like Baths at all (we think that he was abused because he also doesnt like kennels. How do you guys deal with that? Thanks! so glad he found his forever family he looks extremely happy! A: Astro actually LOVES bathes. He will go in the bathroom and try to get in the bathtub by himself randomly. I have to help him get in the tub because his huge clumsy body is not great at making it all the way in the tub on its own. Hahaha But, once he gets in the tub he stands perfectly still and is content. One of our previous foster moms used to swear by putting a glob of peanut butter on the shower wall and she said that kept the dog busy while she bathed them. I have one girl that isn’t big on bathes, she just gets very nervous. I keep treats in the bathroom while I bathe her and she gets a treat every few minutes or if she starts to get antsy I’ll give her one to settle her down. Denise Morad – Q: Astro is so beautiful and looks at peace with you. Are you his forever Mom? A: Yes, this is his forever home. Venta Silins – Q: Congratulations to Astro and your family! He looks like a great dog. I have to say if chewing stuff was an issue, there would be lots of trouble at my house. Im on my fourth and final cell phone under my warranty, and I have a year to go! My question is kind of general since Im somewhat new to Huntington. Are there restrictions on dogs who looK like pit bulls in the city? I tried searching for something, and I couldnt find anything. A: Hahaha..I know how you feel! He will attempt to grab your phone if you leave it laying in mouths reach. But very rarely. “Pit Bull” type dogs (anything with a blocky head and stout body, or whatever animal control wants to deem a “pit bull”) and wolf hybrids (last time I checked) ARE restricted in Huntington, WV. That does not mean that they are banned, but the parents of these bully breeds have to abide by a different set of standards and rules than other breeds. I honestly cannot name off all of the stupid restrictions that they have for them, but I know that they must be muzzled at all times, you aren’t allowed to have an open window in your home (ya know, because obviously the vicious pibble is going to jump out of a window and maul the neighborhood children), and they must not be free roaming, meaning that they must be inside of a secured and fenced in yard at all times, you must register your dog etc etc. You get the point. We (Pitiful paws rescue) refuse to adopt any pit bull type dogs within the city limits of Huntington for this reason. Also, the fact that since they were able to pass a restriction…they will most likely pass a ban eventually and then all of the innocent dogs that we placed could be taken away and destroyed. We actually live in Barboursville where there are no restrictions and such. I will NEVER move within Huntington city limits for that reason. Nancy Disch –Q: Where do you work that Astro can go to work with you? A: I work for my family’s company. My Grandpa started the company way back when, then my Dad took over, and now my brother and I both work there. I am usually not in the office too often and am usually traveling over the state, but this month it just so happens that I am in the office for several hours each day. If we don’t have planned meetings and such I will take him with me. Lisa Stripe Demarest –Q: I saw a post further down where he got to meet lots of new people. What do you have him do for greetings? (Im asking b/c my gooberhead is very friendly but bouncy, so interested in how others have handled greetings before canine perfection is achieved) GREAT work Astro & Humans alike, btw! A: Well, that is a tricky one. Everyone at Petco was stopping to watch his training and wanting to love on him. There are dividers set up so that we have a room to ourselves in part of the store for the training. People would come up and he would run over and jump up on the divider to see them. They loved on him and petted him. But I will say that he made a little girl cry for a split second. She was standing there and wanted him to jump up on the divider, but when he did his paw pinched just a teeny bit of her arm in between his paw and the divider. He didn’t mean to, and her mom even said…you wanted him to jump up to the girl. She wasn’t hurt, it wasn’t a big deal, but things like that are what make me nervous. He doesn’t understand how big he is and he does occasionally jump when he gets excited to see new people. We stopped at Starbucks and Taco bell we were only in the drive-throughs and he was in the back seat, he decided to shove his head past mine in between the seat and the window and he stuck his big meaty head out the window. The starbucks employees working the window yelled for everyone to come to the window and he drooled and licked them as they held their hands out. He is ridiculous. Lol Same thing at Taco Bell. They couldn’t believe how huge he was. BUT, jumping up on people and containing himself is part of his training that we will work on. Nicole Evans Messineo – Q: Does he love his godmother? A: Astro said that Nicole Messineo is the BEST godmother EVER! And that you need to visit him in WV.
