Keep your Fascia healthy Published 04/08/14 Fascia is a sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue consisting of closely packed collagen fibres that are able to stretch and recoil and that run parallel to the direction of pull on the fibres. The fascia is enveloping, separating or binding together muscles allowing them to glide over each other. The fascia is also covering organs, bones, nerves and blood vessels in your body. Not enough exercising, stretching or injuries can lead to adhesions in the fascia. The underlaying muscle tissues become stuck together and you may feel stiff and get restricted movement. Here are just a few simple tips on how you may avoid this happening; Remember to play and dance! “Kids activities” keep your fascia healthy. Regular yoga classes can be very beneficial. Remember to drink lots of water! Did you know that 2/3 of your fascia is liquid. If we do not replace the fluid we lose by sweating or going to the toilet we would not survive. Dehydration would set in, firstly with headaches, tiredness and loss of concentration. The British Dietetic Association advises us to drink 2.5 litres a day to remain healthy. Be patient! I read that it may take a 1 year to increase the flexibility in your fascia, 2-3 months to build bigger muscles and 2-3 years to make deep changes to your fascia and body’s flexibility. So don’t give up. Keep on stretching. Sing and love a lot! It promotes your breathing and supplies your body (fascia, muscles and organs) with more oxygen so it can function better. You need to keep moving and exercising as well as working on your flexibility on a regular basis in order to get the best short- and longterm results. Regular massage is also a great way of keeping your fascia healthy. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
