LAKE TITICACA. This is the second largest lake of SOUTH AMERICA and the highest navigable lake of the whole world and is also the legendary birth place of the INCAN civilization. It is situated, in a depression in the HIGH PLAIN between the parallel ranges of ANDES on the border of BOLIVIA and PERU.. Its elevation is about 12500 feet. It is so high above the sea level that the people living in this region differ physically from people living at lower altitude.. The local,-AYAMARAN and URAN INDIANS have larger lungs, hearts and spleen and they possess more R. B. C. in their bloods than majority of humans. These physical adaption enable them to survive in thin and oxygen poor air. The total are a o f lake TITICACA is 3200 sq. miles Its maximum depth is 900 feet. Traces of old shore lines seen in the basin proves that lake TITICACA was larger in the past.. At the end of the ICE-AGE, MELTED WATER FROM THE huge ice caps that once covered the ANDES, POURED INTO AN INLAND SEA KNOWN as lake BOLIVIAN. The water level varies by 16 feet from season to season and from year to year. T he lake is fed by rainfall and water from glaciers. Only, 10% of the inflow escapes through the only outlet from the lake and the rest is lost through evaporation due to intense sunshine and strong wind. The lake is an important commercial l waterways with steamers regularly plying in the water. The INDIAN people,--the UROS, live on the lake itself. They live on a reed raft made of TOTORA, a reed like papyrus that grows in the shallows. They still live in an ancient way of life and depend on the lake for fish. The past is sacred for the people .Every one knows the legend of “ THE CHILDREN OF SUN “. Because it is believed that, “ ISLA de TITICACA”, the SUN GOD sent from this lake the man and woman who long, long ago founded the INCA EMPIRE ( WITH THE HELP FROM THE NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD,).
