LETTER TO THE EDITOR Toowoomba Chronicle 2 September 2014 I note with concern (but not surprise) that the section of James Street west of Kitchener Street is Toowoomba’s worst crash zone (Toowoomba Chronicle “Citys most dangerous street revealed” 25 August). What is of even greater concern is that these dangers have been known about for some time. As a result I successfully lobbied the former Labor Government to fund the construction of right-hand turning lanes at the Geddes-James, Hume-James and Neil-James Street intersections. The work was to be carried out in 2012. Unfortunately the incoming Newman–LNP Government scrapped this funding, most likely because it was a “Labor idea”. This is Toowoomba’s main thoroughfare, carrying thousands of trucks and commuters every day. As our city grows, this situation will only become more and more dangerous. This is clearly evidenced by these new statistics. James Street sits smack-bang in the middle of Trevor Watts’ and John McVeigh’s electorates. Surely both MPs can put aside party politics and reinstate this vitally needed funding. The safety of our community should not be dependent on the outcome of the next State Election.
