LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It has left many parents who live in the area concerned. Lexington Police tell us a student claimed two other juveniles with a gun attacked and robbed him as he walked to school. We are told that incident happened Monday morning in Gainesway Park near Tates Creek High School.Parents are saying they know that the area doesnt have a good rap and even say that school officials advise not to have school functions in that park.I think the crime is higher, said Patricia Lapp, a parent of three kids in the school system. I think the violence is higher.Frankly, I was quite shocked, said Helue Shalash. I know this isnt the best of neighborhoods around here. Id been at work all day. I hadnt heard anything.Parents reactions to the incident are filled with concern, fearing for their kids safety near these Tates Creek schools.I have a boy whos a senior, a girl whos a junior, and then I have a 7th grader at the middle school, said Shalash.Theyre even worried with a police department nearby.Theyre right here already and obviously that didnt keep the guy from assaulting him, said Lapp. They cant be everywhere.Lexington Police tell us it happened at 11:30 a.m., leaving the student robbed of his backpack. Its pretty significant that it happened in the middle of the day, said Lapp. Normally you see that kind of stuff happening at night, but now that its escalating to even in broad daylight with kids walking back and forth to school. That says something. So what can you do to keep your kids safe? Telling my kids to be on alert, to know your surroundings, and to always walk together, said Shalash.I drive her, and Im perfectly happy to do that if thats what it takes for me to keep them safe, said Lapp.Lexington Police are working with school officials to find the attackers. Were told the student is okay and was at home earlier Monday afternoon icing his eye after the attack.School leaders say they do not plan to change any security policies and referred all questions to police. He said the shortfall came from years of losing both state and federal funding.Fayette County Schools tell us they will issue a response to the audit on Wednesday afternoon.
