LIONEL’S DAILY BOUQUETS AND BEEF POST WEDNESDAY, 29TH JANUARY, 2014 BOUQUET: A big special bouquet today is for Markus Schwabe, of CBC Radio. Markus has just celebrated his 25th anniversary of working for the corporation. Markus has been an integral part of our lives and community here in Sudbury since he arrived around 15 years or so ago. His early morning show, Morning Northern, is always a bright start to the day. How he manages to make it to the station by around 4.30 am every morning through fog, rain, blizzards and ice storms is truly amazing. Markus participates in and supports so many community activities and he gives so freely of his time. His effervescent personality makes every event very special. In his relatively short time here he has learned just about all the geography of the region and has got to know just about everyone from James Bay to Parry Sound. Keep up the great work Markus – you are appreciated by a very appreciative audience and following. BEEF. A really super big beef today is for and about all the mindless media attention being paid to Justin Bieber and Mayor Rob Ford. It is most disgusting that so much air time is wasted on a spoiled teenage ill mannered and uncouth punk. What an appalling example to our impressionable youth. And then we have Mayor Rob Ford who shoots himself so many times in the foot he barely has time to reload. These two clowns generate for themselves far more publicity than they deserve – and worse still it is free. There is the old cliché that roughly states that “There Is No Such Thing As Bad Publicity”. During the troubles in Northern Ireland and the UK the British Government decided to ban all news reports of bombings and terrorist type acts. This had the effect of sucking away the oxygen that gave notoriety to these events. If the press had not shown up at the Justin Bieber fiasco when he checked into the police station in Toronto there would not have been money squandered on the dozen or so police that had to control the mob. The same applies to Rob Ford. If the press just left City Hall for a week or two things would normalize – or at least become as normal as Toronto can even be. So to the press, leave these sensation seekers alone and go and report on something useful and important.
