Last week, as other MPs were planning their exodus from Ottawa, - TopicsExpress

Last week, as other MPs were planning their exodus from Ottawa, Elizabeth May was working hard right up to the last minutes of the Parliamentary session. During attempts to speed the passage of Bill S-15 before summer recess, Elizabeth May blocked a motion for unanimous consent, concerned that the Bill would allow for oil and gas activities in the newly created Sable Island National Park Reserve. "I am disappointed that the Conservatives, NDP and Liberals were willing to speed this Bill through the House without proper scrutiny, but I am unwilling to take that step," said Elizabeth May. Bill S-15 will, among other things, establish Sable Island as a National Park Reserve, a move that the Green Party enthusiastically supports. Unfortunately, Bill S-15 will also allow Exxon-Mobil to conduct oil and gas exploration activities on Sable Island itself, in addition to drilling and fracking beneath the island using directional drilling. Most troubling of all, all regulation of these activities will rest with the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board, an organization with an explicit mandate to promote oil and gas development. Ultimately, despite Elizabeth’s best efforts, the Bill was passed and became law on June 19th. https://greenparty.ca/media-release/2013-06-07/bill-s-15-would-allow-oil-and-gas-activities-inside-sable-island-national-p
